Watch http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/35233734#35217619 first to the end and then read the rest of this blog...

First off and foremost, this IS and WAS a TERRIBLE attack and totally uncalled for and I hope that the dogs involved are put down and the owner made responsible!! However did you notice (you may have to watch the feed a couple times) they only pointed out the one dog as a pit mix and did not refer to the rest at all, making it seem as a pack of pits mauled the family? And if you look thru the rest of the pack they are not even close to being pitbulls, my goodness, one is an Australian Cattle dog for crying out loud! Not the type of dog that strikes fear into your heart, unless you are a sheep, lol. Once again, I in no way defend any of these dogs but if I didnt know better I would be absolutely terrified of the pitbull dog.

Pounds, shelters and breeders who claim that the Pit Bull is not a breed exacerbate the problem. In some ways those that claim they want to help the most are the Pit Bulls worst enemy. Claiming the Pit Bull is a type and not a breed is false. The Pit Bull has been recognized as a pure breed for over 100 years and as a breed is older than most other breeds that are recognized as purebred and no one would ever consider calling them anything different. Those who say it is a generic term perpetuate the harm as saying it is generic is what makes it generic. Just because people abbreviate the term to Pit Bull from American Pit Bull Terrier does not make it generic. Abbreviation is a matter of convenience. I think no one would call a Chow generic just because the person using the terminology did not say Chow Chow. Same for Doberman, same for Rottie. As Pit Bull enthusiasts we need to take the name back including its abbreviated format and resist efforts people are making to generalize the breed. Why is it that the CDC in reporting dog attacks refers to Pit Bull type when they would not dare refer to something as a Chow Type or a Shepherd Type? If something is a mutt then we need to note it as a mutt. If we are unsure we need to say we are unsure. Classifying the Pit Bull as anything other than a pure breed is what is exacerbating the Pit Bull dilemma, gives fodder to a corrupt and sensationalist media, props up false allegations on the breed that are used to support breed specific laws and destroys value and pride. Anyone that says different needs to be swiftly corrected and not allowed to give an excuse of saying otherwise. Ignorance is not an excuse and for those that should no better this is especially true.

While it is sad this situation has happened the dog that is claimed to be a Pit Bull is obviously not pure and thus should not be singled out. What about the other dogs? Why was their breed not brought into the story? Why was this dog singled out as the leader? This is typical of the media today. How would we act if this was a human on human attack where there were several races involved yet only one was singled out? This story smacks of propaganda and sensationalism strictly to embellish media ratings. Where has honor and truth went? The media is supposed to be non-bias and honest. This story is further proof that that this is no longer the standard for our society or the news. When a story is not based in truth or comes from a biased perspective it is called an editorial. How would the news outlets act if they all had to change their names from the whatever news to the whatever editorial? They would not accept this and we should not accept them or anyone else to hijack out breed and call it anything other than a purebred and not allow anything not purebred Pit Bull to be lumped into the breed haphazardly.
