The Story of Mack

Mack
...
April 1st: My husband, James, works for Old Dominion Freight line. One Friday evening after his shift he sees a stray dog in the parking lot. Having been around dogs his entire life he knows how to handle himself. He sees the dog is very malnourished and wants to help. He attempted to call to the dog but it wouldn’t come. When all seemed lost he came up with a brilliant plan. Chase him. Of course, this culminated in the dog running for the hills. Feeling defeated, James wandered back to his truck, got in and began to leave the parking lot. On his way to the main road he spots the dog alongside the car. A thought struck him to open the driver’s side door and call the dog one more time. He did so and miraculously the dog climbed over him to get to the passenger seat. Away they went.

Being as April 1st was my birthday, we ate dinner with my parents that night. I still had no idea there was a dog in my husband’s truck. When we arrived home and sat on the couch he suddenly said, "Oh, there’s a dog in my truck.” Obviously I was dumbstruck. Thinking him as #$@! for 1; not telling be about the dog and 2; leaving the dog in the truck while we went to eat I was slightly unhappy. He explained the dog was a boxer (we later discovered him to be a pit-bull), very malnourished and seemed too mean to leave in the yard with our own 2 dogs. I went outside to have a look at him. He was still in the passenger seat of the truck and did look a little mean. James had left him water and food to do with as he chose. Looking at him I knew if we took him to the pound he would be put down. I did not want that for his future. It wasn’t his fault someone mistreated him.

We brought him in the house and put him in our laundry room. We gave him some blankets to sleep on and more water and food. Once he ate and drank his fill, we could touch him a little. He was only 49 pounds. My fingers could fit in the crevices between his ribs. The next day I took him to the vet with my mother so he could be looked over, given all his shots and tested for any problems. Before I took him, we played in the yard a little. He wandered around some looking at everything. Then he picked up a rock and brought it to me. He laid it at my feet and stood at attention. I was struck dumb again. This emaciated and abused animal wanted to play with me. I picked up the rock and threw it. He flat ran out after it, picked it up in his monstrous mouth and brought it back to me. I couldn’t help but laugh until…I noticed his teeth. They were flat and even with his gum line. I had never seen such a thing before. I had noticed the scars all over his body and thought he may have been a fighting dog but the teeth confirmed it. His back teeth are intact but the front ones top and bottom were filed down to almost nothing. He never had a problem eating even though we had been giving him dry food. With a sad heart at all the pain he must have gone through, we went to the vet.

Mack loves car rides. In fact, he sits straight up and stares out all the windows with joy. He never barked or became nervous in any way and for this I was truly grateful. The vet looked him over and decided for his safety and their own to put a muzzle on him. Not knowing his past I agreed whole heartedly. It was fairly easy to put on and he didn’t struggle much. They tested him for heartworms which was negative, ehrlichia which was positive but we treated it with medicine, lyme disease which was negative, anaplasma phagocytophilum which was negative and they checked his blood for any other abnormalities. We gave him the medication to clean his system of the other bugs he had and got him meds to help his digestive system recover.

After a month passed we took him back to the vet’s office. He weighed in at 61 pounds and received the remainder of his shots. As he was still on the medicine for ehrlichia we had to wait several weeks before we could have him neutered.

Now he is neutered, has his own yard to play in and several toys to chew on as he is an avid chewer. He interacts very little with our own 2 dogs but we have never left them alone together. I would recommend he be in a 1 dog family with lots of room to roam and many toys to play with. He is very loving and gets a belly rub from us every night. The only thing left that he needs is a home, family and big yard to stay in forever.

Can anyone let their heart, soul, and love open up for this sweet sweet boy? Mack has been through so much in his short life already. Now it's time for him to find out the true meaning of love!! I find it incredibly amazing that this once abused and hated dog still wants to be around people, much less wants to LOVE someone and become part of a family!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help us find a home for Mack so that he can live out the rest of his JOY filled days with love and ease!!
