I focus first and foremost on health. All of our dogs' hips and elbows are x-rayed and graded by the OFA upon turning 1 yr old. We submit genetic testing for ataxia on all our breeding stock as well, and run a blood test to determine thyroid function. This is in accordance with recommendations from the Health Committee of the Staffordshire Terrier Club of America (see their website for more info).
Temperament is perhaps the most important factor determining the survival of a given APBT in the world today; I therefore consider temperament an aspect of health and regard it just as highly. The amazing, multi-dimensional, endlessly loyal and selfless temperament of the APBT is what made me fall in love with pits in the first place, after all. We do not tolerate dog aggression in our breeding program. Our dogs also coexist peacefully with the many chickens, ducks, and miniature babydoll sheep on our farm.
I do take conformation into account when selecting breeding stock and breed for true APBT type; that is, a short, stocky, balanced canine that weighs in at around 65 lbs. My dogs are all descended from AKC Am Staff lines with a little UKC APBT mixed in for maximum genetic diversity. I detest the creation and proliferation of these overdone, bully, muscle-bound monstrosities all too commonly seen these days. I hope the American pit bull terrier does not continue to go the way of the bulldog and become an endemically unhealthy, unsound, deformed reflection of human objectification of animals.
I have a degree in genetics and utilize my extensive knowledge of genetics and heredity when making decisions regarding animal husbandry. I do not inbreed, ever.
All of my dogs live inside as valued family members and all of our puppies are raised in our home as well, though they receive extensive outdoor socialization from an early age.
I regard ear cropping as animal cruelty and require all puppy purchasers to sign a no-crop contract.
I offer most of my puppies for sale exclusively on spay/neuter contracts.
I will take back any puppy I produce at any time, for any reason, no questions asked. I am also available as a foster home for any pit bulls in my area who may need it (contact me for details).
