I always thought 'gamey' is the word they used to describe pitbulls who like to fight. However, reading through different articles I have come to believe that the term 'gamey' means something else entirely. I always thought I owned a couple of pitbulls. With the usual pitbull personality, but after being around other peoples pitbulls - I think mine are different and are 'gamey'. Would someone be so kind as to tell me what the actual term means?

when some calls a dog  gamey, it can mean they are more of a lean, very hyper, and with LOTS of drive! most of my dogs are gamey. due to the fact i have dogs who can jump a 6 foot fence, i have a 6 month old puppy who can climp up his kennel, which i put a topper on to keep him in, but he will climb up the chain link, grap the topper (chain link) and hang with his mouth and tug on it like a rope, till he has a hole and then will climb out the hole in which he just tore open!! i even have ones who rip up chain link! in which it is not that they dog get enought walks and play, i spend hours with them a day!! i have to keep them toned and in shape for dog shows, and pulls. but in the term "gamey" to me that is, is a very high drive, lean, toned dog! and in which some of them keep thier self toned and in shape on thier own!!!

Gameness is having the will to continue and persevere in any activity: fighting, hunting, herding, pulling a cart, or defending its owner, while being put through great stress and/or intense pain until the goal is accomplished or until death.

Gameness has nothing to do with ability or bravery; it has to do with heart.

Some may think "gamey" means they tend to fight more and thats not true. It actually means to be well rounded, the ability to protect, work, hunt, compete in competitions, and to have the ability not to give up.

when the pit bull was originally bred thats was the only thing that was important. no one cared about head size or color, until old family reds,  all that mattered was if the dogs were game or not. now people breed for so many different things which is why the breed varies so much.
