Just had a friend call me and his dog died. The vet told him that she had an infection in her nipples, and she was just bred and gave birth 5 weeks ago. I have not heard of this before can someone give me insight as to what happened or what he done wrong or is it just something that happens?

IT'S CALLED MASTITIS...IT IS A INFECTION OF THE FEMALES MAMORY GLANDS...SOMETIMES CALLED 'MILK FEVER'.USUALLY A CATTLE DISEASE BUT HAPPENS IN DOGS MORE THAN PPL THINK.IF CAUGHT IN TIME...SIMPLE ANTIBIONICS WILL CLEAR IT RIGHT UP.SOMETIMES IN THE WORST CASES THE INFECTED NIPPLE/NIPPLES WILL BLOW OUT...LEAVE A REALLY NASTY OPEN WOUND.AND SOMETIMES-LIKE WITH YOUR FRIENDS DOG-IF NOT CAUGHT IN TIME,THE FEMALE DIES.WATCH THE PUPS REALLY CLOSE-THE INFECTED MILK CAN KILL PUPS.

ok cool i have done some research and it is more common than ppl think like you were saying. Do you know what causes it genetics or what?

Usually it is caused by a blow to the udder,or a blocked/semi blocked gland were not all the milk flows through like it is suppose to and gets stagnet...finally setting up infection.I have heard that over eager nurcing can cause it...........but not sure how true that is.Course I have seen pups really give mommas a hard time!!

rather I would say that under nursing causes it rather than over nursing. In fact it usually can be avoided by making sure the nipple is draining completely.
it can also be caused by something as simple as that nipple not getting drained fully at nursing. That can tend to happen in small litters (although large litters as well) where the pups have there 'favorite' teats and drain those ones constantly and not the one in question which builds up and gets blocked up causing infection.
was the dog still nursing when she died? if the pups were weaned from her abruptly, it definitely could have caused the mastitis. On the other hand, if momma was still nursing and no pups died at all before she did.. I would suspect that was the cause of death..

The pups were weened he said for about a week, then all the sudden she became lethargic. He took her to vet and she passed at vets office that night. I went over to his place today to see him and the pups look great, eating great, plenty of energy

When ever we wean a litter...momma is held off food for one full day then for the week after-1/2 rations so she dries out very quickly with no problems. But mastitis can happen while the pups are still very young as well....and yes, poss because that nipple isn't being suckled as much...or a blockeage, but our vet said that a over robust litter can also bruse that gland and infection sets ups.

ah yes over robust and they bruise it that makes sense. also getting scratched or cut can open it up for infection to set in as well. Terrible shame tho, such a hard loss! Glad the pups made it

It is very very sad!!...and most breeders do not even know about mastitas-have never heard of it until it hits one of their girls..
We had milk cows when I was a kid that I had to milk every day-morning and night. One of our girls would get a case of it every now and again.Caused from her kicking up at her belly at flies.Milked that teat out and throw it away.
