So Bell is in heat again (big surprise). I am hesitant to breed them because I am afraid of not being able to sell the pups to the right type of home. Are those of you that breed selling your entire litter in a timely fashion ie between 6-10wks old?

you should only breed when you know that you (A) have a good reason to breed other than your dog being in heat-theres too many dogs in shelters and rescues for you to be irresponsible,(B)if you have a good reason to breed and already have homes for the pups (C)are goingto keep all of the pups or (D)a combo of B and C

So is that a yes or a no? I ask because I have people who want pups. I didn't breed her last time and I'm not this time. I haven't bred either one of them in fact. I orginially thought if I had 1/2 the litter spoken for I would breed them. Which is the way I do my guardian dogs. I never have trouble finding good, working homes for the others by 8wks.
I think Pits are different especially with the Bully fad going on. I just like to be able to have my dogs work, guardians or Pits and the Bully's just don't do anything for me.

I totally love animals. I love my pits. Too many people breed their dogs. I have to agree with bill wright.

There are over 4 million dogs put down each year, about a million of them are perfectly adoptable pits. This includes whole litters of puppies. Killed and sent to rendering plants and turned into dog food.

If you really love the breed, how can you do that to them? I'm not saying don't breed your dog, be responsible when you do. Make sure you already have homes, good homes for the litter.

Dogs are not turned into dog food in this country, at least not by plants. Our dogs here at our shelter that are gassed are taken to the landfill.
I'm not sure where you came up with the rendering plants and dog food story.

Personally I think the perfect solution to breeding is to collect, store and neuter. If your animals are not worth collecting and storing then fix them.

That's my plan at any rate, it will be the wave of the future, no more backyard breeding, no more genetic thoughtless moments, no more oops, we've all had our oops at some time or another with some animal. Keep the best--------fix the rest.

Hmm. Actually there are quite a few articles on the subject (rendering). It is quite horrifying to say the least. I honestly dont even want to share the links as it is quite terrible to even think about. It may not be legal but there are loopholes with no thorough checks. After whatever stuff is rendered, it is simply labeled as meat byproducts and sold to a different manufacturers who then sell to the next in line etc. There are interviews in which representatives admit they have no clue what 'meat' is in there byproducts, meaning that well anything could be in there (and he does mention 'fido' as one of the possiblities)
There was a huge outcry over this several years ago (http://www.commondreams.org/headlines02/0106-03.htm). So hopefully this is not a current ongoing thing but I dont know.

As for the original subject.. this time of year things seem to slow down. The holidays have passed and most have just spent there tax rebates. I would probally choose to skip this heat and try for the next and be in the holiday marketSmile

I still have 2 pups left out of 10 from my Nov. 2009 breeding & thats because I gave a few away. I believe there is a puppy season that differs in each part of the country.

O.k so now I need to go take some phenergan. Sometimes not listening to the evening news and taking a paper is a blessing. I was wrong, completely unbelievable though. For sure enough of that topic.

I'm taking my dogs to a Bully show next month, they have a fun show with Classic Pit Bulls, I'll get a better feel of the interest in my dogs after that. Ace was like a celebrity there last time so we'll see how another 6 mths of growth and conditioning did for him.
