Hmm. Actually there are quite a few articles on the subject (rendering). It is quite horrifying to say the least. I honestly dont even want to share the links as it is quite terrible to even think about. It may not be legal but there are loopholes with no thorough checks. After whatever stuff is rendered, it is simply labeled as meat byproducts and sold to a different manufacturers who then sell to the next in line etc. There are interviews in which representatives admit they have no clue what 'meat' is in there byproducts, meaning that well anything could be in there (and he does mention 'fido' as one of the possiblities)
There was a huge outcry over this several years ago (http://www.commondreams.org/headlines02/0106-03.htm). So hopefully this is not a current ongoing thing but I dont know.
