when i do a breeding,i only keep one pup and cull the rest unless there is a trusted place i can place a dog with,i cull out for certain reason's,dog doesn't fit the standard, doesnt fit my standard, not what im looking for and no home for it.
so this brings a good question,
do you cull and what are the reasons you do?

AND WHEN YOU 'CULL' THESE PUPS-WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THEM? IF I AM READING THIS RIGHT AND IF YOU 'CULL' LIKE THE 'OLD SCHOOL' DOG OWNERS/BREEDER-YOU HIT THEM IN THE HEAD AND TOSS THEM OUT LIKE GARBAGE. IS THIS HOW YOU 'CULL'YOUR PUPS?

I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY YOU JUST DO NOT GO TO ANOTHER BREEDER TO GET YOUR PUP.WHY PUT YOUR FEMALE THROUGH A BREEDING/BIRTHING-RUN THE RISK OF A COMPLICATION ,POSS.C-SECTION OR EVEN WORSE FOR ONE PUP.
THE FEMALE SURE DIDN'T ASK TO BE BRED,THE PUPS SURE DIDN'T ASK TO BE BORN AND THEN DID NOT ASK NOT TO BE GIVE A CHANCE TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.I CAN SEE PUTTING A PUP DOWN IF THERE IS A HEALTH ISSUE OR SERIOUS BIRTH DEFECT....YOU ARE ONLY DOING THEM A FAVOR.
BUT THE WHOLE IDEA OF CULLING PUPS JUST BECAUSE THEY DO NOT FIT YOUR STANDARD-IS SOOO WRONG IN MY EYES.

ni its not wrong,a whole slew of the old school breeders would cull the dog if it didnt fit the standards or their standards.the reason i do it is that i am not going to contribute to all of the dogs out there in shelter's and if it isnt what im looking for i dont keep it,

i am assuming that you begin your culliing after whelp. What I would say is very often the pup ends up looking nothing like they did when born. My last litter I had a pup born that I was sure was the ugliest pup alive. Two, three, four weeks, five, still he looked goofy and i wondered if i would be able to find him a home. Six weeks he looked ok, there was hope. And then one day between 7 and 8 weeks I was taking pics and thought what the ? He was stunning!
It is my belief that if the pup is healthy without an obvious defect culling is wrong. Personally I could never cull period but I do know that there is a time and place for it. My opinion is that if you are having to cull an entire litter then it is perhaps that you are not starting with quality dogs in the first place. This however does not make sense to me as you do seem to know what your talking about in many regards and do have high standards. So my next question would be to wonder why you would breed in the first place? However that is not the question at hand and I do not want to make this personal at all. To answer the thread question.. no I do not cull. I do believe that some animals that are below standards should not be allowed to reproduce and it is the breeders responsibility to ensure there sterilization. I also believe that I am responsible for what I bring into this world and must be prepared and able to provide for it should I not be able to find homes. As for why I do not cull.. I am not God.. it is not my right to choose who is allowed to live and who must die. This is my opinion.

you are correct in assuming that it is after whelping, lets remember,a dog is a puppy until 2 years of age.plenty of time to notice if there any defects and to see if it fits my program.why dont i just go out and buy another one, well, there are certain things i look for, someone else may not have what im wanting, second,i dont believe in contributing to so many dogs in the shelter's.i keep maybe one or two, then place the others that have already gotten homes before the dam and sire are even bred.
ive only had to ever cull 3 dogs, and they were defected, the rest are still kickin and living great lives.dont get me wrong,im not saying kill em all.but i have what i have and it never gets into an untrusted persons hands.i dont believe the general public should have their hands on these dogs.some individual that doesnt even know anythign about these dog's should never own one,and theres a good reason for it,BSL,idiots using pit bulls for protection.i keep my dogs to myself and trusted close personal friends.

When Onyx and Rocko had their only litter we did not cull any of the pups. Even the pup that had a kinked tail and a heart murmur we did not want to cull… we actually did everything we could to keep her alive but it just didn’t work out that way (like it wasn’t meant to be in the first place). Plus we had a family wanting her even though she had a kinked tail and they were planning on having her fixed and never bred. We made sure we had numerous people on our waiting list wanting most of our pups. We had 2 pups left over that people on the waiting list backed out on, so we kept them til they were around 5-6 months old and found them both awesome loving homes like the rest of the litter. Most of the people we sold the pups to wound up fixing them all on their own because they didn’t want to breed.

So overall we would do anything to keep a pup alive and to place them in the right home. If any pup survived having any problems then they would need to be fixed and never bred so there would be no risk of producing more problem pups. We would still give them and opportunity to live a happy life. The only way we would have a pup euthanized is if it had a cleft lip or something that absolutely could not be fixed and was causing more harm/pain than any good. Just wanted to add what we did with our breeding.

i apologize, you made it sound like you culled every dog that did not meet your criteria- there are good reasons to put down a dog- human aggression, diseases, old age. I agree wholeheartedly that most humans should not own a pit bull. It takes a greater responsibility that must be taken seriously. Ignorance is no excuse. My female will never be allowed to just roam without a leash. They still are dogs that were bred for a purpose, and we need to respect that.

I don’t think you are an ahole, just very opinionated and believe what you do… and you try to get the point across but get frustrated easily, you might have better luck no being as harsh though.

We used to get P.O.ed when people wouldn’t understand (or try to understand) what we were saying, but now we try to explain everything out and not have any arguments and keep it as a discussion where everyone can state their opinions and if they have proof to back it up, that’s always a plus!

Half of the time when there is a discussion I’m always learning something new about a bloodline or the way other breeders do things… that’s why I like to be apart of discussions so any questions I have are answered.

GLAD YOU CLEARED THAT UP.IT SOUNDED AS IF YOU LET THEM GET UP JUST A FEW WEEKS ,PICKED YOUR PUP/PUPS AND THEN HAD THE REST OF THE LITTER PUT DOWN.I STILL DO NO AGREE WITH 'CULLING.' IF THE PUP/DOG IS HEALTHY AND WITH A GOOD TEMPERMENT [ EVEN A PUP WITH A HEART MURMUR -MOST OUT GROW IT ].I UNDERSTAND AND AGREE THAT IF A DOG HAS SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES AND THERE IS NO HOPE AND WOULD CAUSE PAIN TO THE ANIMAL-OR THE DOG IS HUMAN OR EXTREMELY ANIMAL AGGRESSIVE,HAVING THEM PUT DOWM.BUT THE WHOLE IDEA OF CULLING A DOG JUST BECAUSE IT DOES NOT FIT THE 'STANDARD' DOES NOT SIT WELL WITH ME.I COULD NEVER-NOR WILL I EVER,DO IT.EVERY LIVING ANIMAL DESERVES A CHANCE.EVEN THE RUNTS THAT ARE SOOOO PUNNY-LOOK LIKE HELL-THAT I WOULD NEVER EVEN TRY TO PLACE, IS GIVEN EVERY CHANCE- NO MATTER WHAT THE COST.IN MY BOOK-IT ANIT OVER TILL IT'S OVER.MOST MAKE IT-SOME DO NOT,BUT I HAVE ATLEAST TRIED.AND THE ONES THAT DO,USUALLY ARE THE BIGGER DOG-MAKE THE BEST DOG.THEY ARE ALTERED AND WE EITHER KEEP THEM OR ARE PLACED IN A FAMILY HOME.

well ,mike, thats really childish.that dog in my pic,he had won and placed at several adba shows, not bad for an ugly dog, that ugly dog was the best damn dog ive ever owned, that dog was a chapmpion,,what has your ugly mutt done? if i went on looks alone i would have never got that dog, thats the  thing, people go by looks of a dog,and thats should be the very least important thing when it comes to these dogs.ya know,i bet your dog just to make yourself look cool mike,,is that it,you wanted to look tough in front of your buddies?
